What are Botox and Dysport?
Botox and Dysport are both neuromodulators that temporarily block signals to muscles that lie beneath the skin. Relaxing these muscles reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines on the skin.
For cosmetic procedures, Botox is the name that refers to the purified form of botulinum toxin type A, which is derived from the bacteria named Clostridium botulinum. Botox is not only used to treat facial wrinkles but is also used to improve the appearance of the neck and to reduce sweating in areas such as the hands, armpits, and even feet.
Dysport is another FDA-approved neuromodulator proven to help smooth the frown lines between your eyebrows and is also used to address other facial lines due to repeated expression, creating a smooth, natural look. Dysport may have a quicker onset of action and may begin to work within a few days following treatment.
Botox, Dysport, Xeomin® and Jeuveau® are the 4 neuromodulators approved for use in the U.S; they are deemed safe for cosmetic procedures and have relatively few side effects when used correctly. Dr. West’s extensive training and experience means that your Washington D.C. Botox, Dysport, Xeomin or Jeuveau treatment will target only those muscles that cause your skin to wrinkle, leaving you with an overall natural appearance.

“I use dermal fillers and neuromodulators in combination to sculpt and contour the face. The goal of treatment is always to look refreshed but natural. The ability to balance the face by restoring volume to the areas where volume loss has occurred, without erasing important landmarks (like nasolabial folds for example), gives a result that allows patients to get rid of a tired, sad, hollow, droopy appearance and to maintain that refreshed look over time. I always emphasize the goal of not looking like anything was done and explain that is the result of years of training and experience.”

If you decide that Botox and Dysport are the right options for your smoother-looking skin, Dr. West will perform the procedure based on the specifications determined during your consultation.
During
A typical Botox or Dysport procedure begins with a 10-20 minute period of numbing using a customized topical anesthetic. The injection takes about 10 minutes, depending on the areas treated. The process is usually fast and painless with minimal downtime. Most patients report only minimal discomfort, like a pinch.
Due to her unparalleled experience and reputation as the best dermatologist in Chevy Chase, MD, Dr. West and her expert staff are highly precise with every injection. They understand how even the most subtle choices can make drastic improvements to your appearance. This is what makes Dr. West at The West Institute your best choice for Botox and Dysport in Northern Virginia.
Do Botox and Dysport Treatments Hurt?
Botox is in many ways the opposite of painful: by freezing certain nerve signals, a patient is apt to feel less pain. Some doctors even think that because it freezes frowning muscles it acts as an anti-depressant. Most patients don’t even need painkillers!
A little more painful are the dermal filler injectables. Although most hyaluronic acid filler come stocked with lidocaine in them, often times a topical numbing agent is used before treatment. Why? Because even though hyaluronic acid as an injectable isn’t too harsh, the lips and surround areas can be extremely sensitive.
What To Avoid After Botox
1. Lying Down
After receiving Botox, you should wait at least four hours before lying down to avoid the risk of pressure on the treated areas, to avoid the risk of having the area rubbed accidentally, and lastly to avoid the Botox to migrate.
2. Rigorous Activities or Exercises
After receiving your Botox treatment, you should not engage in activities where your head is below your heart–for example at a yoga class–stretching class or simply bending over. Any type of aerobic exercises may exacerbate headaches and should be avoided for at least 24 hours after Botox treatment.
3. Massaging Injection Sites
While moving your muscles and making natural expressions is okay, another prohibited action after receiving Botox is rubbing the areas of injection. Doing so can potentially cause the Botox to spread to other areas of the face. It is important not to press on the injection areas for at least several hours while the Botox diffuses throughout the muscle that it was injected in

Botox FAQs
While any injectable procedure can lead to bruising, Dr. West takes multiple steps to make sure your bruising is minimal. She offers an Accuvein device, which visualizes vessels prior to injections to help minimize bruising. Dr. West offers complimentary laser treatments to all of her patients to reduce bruising after injections when needed.
The cost of a Botox or Dysport treatment depends on the number of units used for treatment. Dr. West published the first article in the international medical literature, in the peer-reviewed journal Dermatologic Surgery, demonstrating the correlation between the dose (units) of Botox and the duration of efficacy. We will provide you with an estimate after Dr. West has properly examined you in consultation and has determined the amount of neuromodulator recommended for your specific concerns and anatomy.
Botox and Dysport are both neuromodulators that temporarily block signals to your muscles that lie beneath the skin. Inhibiting these muscles causes them to weaken and reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines on your skin. When used to treat lines between the eyebrows, there is often an accompanying brow lift effect due to the relaxation of muscles that function to pull down on the brows, resulting in a fresher, more open-eyed appearance.
Typically, a Botox or Dysport treatment will last for approximately three to six months. Dr. West will educate you on the optimal dosage and treatment interval to maintain your best possible results.
Dr. West offers an array of non-surgical facial procedures, including her trademarked “Facelift In A Syringe” non-surgical facelift, face & neck contouring, dermal fillers, eye rejuvenation, and more. Dr. West will discuss all of your cosmetic concerns and what you hope to achieve and will advise you on which procedures will work best for your concerns.
When Botox is used to relax muscles of facial expression, you will start to see results in about 3-5 days; following Dysport treatment, you may notice relaxation of the muscles of facial expression starting as early as the morning after treatment.
When treatment is performed by an experienced, board certified provider, results should look completely natural. You will still be able to make facial expressions, but etched lines in the skin will be softened or erased. If you start early when you just start to see lines at rest and continue with maintenance treatments, you will likely avoid the development of permanent frown, forehead and crow’s feet wrinkles.
Immediately following treatment, you may notice temporary bumps at the injection sites. Within about 10 minutes, it will appear that nothing was done, and you can look forward to seeing your results within 24 hours (for Dysport) or 48-72 hours for Botox.
When you start to notice expression lines at rest, such as vertical grooves between the eyebrows, horizontal forehead lines, or crow’s feet, it may be a good time to start using a neuromodulator like Botox or Dysport. Additionally, if you desire a lift of your eyebrows, anytime you start treatment you can achieve a brow lift effect due to relaxation of muscles that pull down on the brows.
You can go back to work immediately but must keep your head upright for 2 hours following treatment if the frown lines between the brows are treated to avoid migration to adjacent muscles.
Prior to any injection, it is prudent to discontinue any medications or supplements that thin the blood and predispose to bruising. This includes ibuprofen, aspirin, turmeric, vitamin E, fish oil, anticoagulants such as coumarin, and other oral supplements that affect platelet function. After treatment, if you develop a bruise your provider may be able to use a vascular laser for dramatically increased healing. There are also specific topical creams that your provider may recommend and dispense that have been shown to speed healing of bruising.
Comparing Botox to Dysport is like comparing apples to apples – both products address the same concerns and have earned FDA approval for safety and efficacy. Often, the choice comes down to preference. Dysport’s formula contains smaller protein particles than Botox, which is why you will notice your results sooner. Dysport also tends to spread to a wider area than Botox, which can be advantageous when addressing larger treatment areas such as your forehead.
Botox and Xeomin are identical at the chemical level, though Xeomin goes through an extra purification step.
Botox is ideal for wrinkles such as crow’s feet, forehead furrows, and glabellar lines between the eyebrows. It has earned FDA approval for treating all three of these concerns. The newest neuromodulator, Daxxify, which is set to launch in 2023, lasts up to 6 months for these same concerns.
Botox’s effects typically wear off after three to four months, and you can maintain your revitalized appearance with periodic touch-ups.
Through extensive training, Dr. West has refined her technique to maximize results using minimal injectable materials. You can still make facial expressions after getting Botox, and your results will look naturally refreshed.
